USA Escape Elimination From Women’s World Cup After Goalless Draw With Portugal
The United States, USA team qualified by the skin of the teeth on Tuesday into the knock-out stage in the ongoing Women’s World Cup competition after playing a goalless draw with Portugal.
The 0-0 result meant that USA ended as second in Group E with Netherlands topping the group with seven points having won two matches and drawn one. The United States on the other hand garnered five points having won one match and drawn two.
GWG.ng reports that USA which is the defending champions were overwhelmed in the table rankings after Netherlands overwhelmed the fourth team in the group, Vietnam by 7-0.
For the USA the ambition to top the group became even a challenge as they needed to beat Portugal by as much as 7-0.
However, in the end, the USA team had to count themselves lucky as they escaped scary moments as the Portugal team came nearer at scoring and at one point hitting the goal post in the second half.
It is the first time in the history of the Women’s World Cup that the USA did not come top in the group stage.
USA and Portugal have met at least 10 times in the past with the Americans winning seven times and drawing the rest. The USA who are the Women’s world champions have in that period scored as much as 30 goals against Portugal but on Tuesday drew blank.
