Nigerians React As Keyamo Screening Splits Senators

Published

on

Festus Keyamo, a nominee for a ministerial position, was the subject of a heated debate in the Senate on Monday.

In order to be considered for a new position under President Bola Tinubu, Keyamo, a minister of state for labour and employment in the administration of previous President Muhammadu Buhari, came before the Senate.

But when Darlington Nwokocha (LP, Abia Central) moved the motion asking the suspension of the nominee’s screening, things took a bad turn. Nwokocha reminded Keyamo of how, while serving as a minister, he had insulted the members of both chambers.

Additionally, he brought up allegations of corruption against the candidate and how he disregarded a call to the National Assembly in 2020 regarding the employment plan for the 774,000 Nigerians hired for the special public works programme.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, of the APGA, from Abia South, then seconded the motion. Due to this argument, some legislators demanded division, which, if established, might reduce the Senate President’s authority. The Senate President who was visibly troubled, stood up and called for order.

As a response, Keyamo asserted that the politicians were attempting to extort him and sabotage the SPW exercise and added that the “beneficiaries are not from the moon.”

The issue unfolding has many Nigerians talking with #keyamo trending on twitter with over 17,000 tweets. Many Nigerians are sharing their opinion on the matter. GWG.ng reports these tweets;

“It is indeed a great honor that I have been nominated by resident Tinubu to serve this great nation once more , but I must reject this nomination to focus on my family and let others and give others a chance” — Festus Keyamo. To avoid explanation 😂

I am proud of my Senator, Chief Darlington Nwokocha LP, Abia Central, and our Leader Senator Abaribe APGA Abia South for this timely intervention. Things haven’t been this good for our state in a very long time. Orji remains the only blight. I hope he learnt after crying.

Abia state is in good hands

That wasn’t a difficult one to rule on, the ayes had it, but you could see so clearly the bias happening in that chambers just to favor APC

Why couldn’t they use a display to display the votes?

Obi of Nigeria @Chi_MorningStar

All those saying “nay” deserve to be recall, they are enemies of Nigeria. The issue raised against the nominee is material enough to suspend his screening.

Chibueze @excelentspirit
How will any minister take these bunch of unprofessional overpaid clowns serious????
Imagine how rowdy and disgusting their behavior.
If they really wanted to maintain a reputation and earn their respect from the ministers.
There was no need for voting
