Man Fatally Strikes Estranged Wife Amid Divorce Proceedings (Photo)

A man named Victor Sungababwa has reportedly taken the gruesome step of ending his eight-year marriage to his wife, Atrina Munsaka by striking her dead and attempting suicide.

The incident occurred in Zambia. According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga’s statement on August 28, 2023, Victor allegedly used an axe to fatally attack Atrina, 33, as she handed him divorce papers.

The incident occurred between 5:00 and 6:45 AM on Sunday, August 27, at Mayobo’s Siakaceka village in chief Macha of Choma district. Atrina, a housewife from Siamalele village in chief Siachitema, Kalomo District, was allegedly struck in the head by her husband, Victor Sungababwa, 43, of Siakacheka Village Chief Macha.

According to reports, Atrina had initiated divorce proceedings, and a hearing was scheduled for September 9, 2023, at the Bbilili local court. On August 26, 2023, she attempted to serve Victor with divorce summons, but he refused to accept them. The next day, at around 5:00 AM, Victor asked a community crime prevention unit member, Esen Kanimba, to witness the serving of the summons. Tragically, during this process, Victor allegedly retrieved an axe from his home and attacked Atrina, causing a fatal head injury.

After the attack, Victor reportedly attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance. However, Kanimba intervened and sought medical assistance for Victor, who is currently receiving treatment at Choma General Hospital under police guard. Authorities have revealed that Victor’s condition is stable.

Hamoonga stated that the couple had experienced marital disputes since 2015, and Atrina’s decision to divorce Victor marked the culmination of their troubled relationship. The deceased’s body has been transferred to Choma General Hospital Mortuary, awaiting postmortem examination.
