Big Setback For PDP In Kogi As Awoniyi Dumps Party

Senator Dino Melaye’s momentum in the Kogi State governorship race has suffered a major setback with the resignation of the former Deputy Governor of the state, Yomi Awoniyi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Awoniyi had until his resignation been one of the pillars of the PDP in the state and particularly in the Kogi West senatorial district.

GWG.ng reports that he is also the son of one of the founders of the party, the late Chief Sunday Awoniyi.

Awoniyi conveyed his letter of resignation entitled, “Letter of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party”, made available to newsmen in Lokoja.

Awoniyi served as deputy to former Gov Idris Wada.

He conveyed his resignation in a letter dated August 31 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi.

The letter partly read: “I hereby write to tender my letter of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party after 25 unbroken years of loyal and dedicated membership and service.”

“With this resignation letter, I cease to be a member of the PDP.

“Kindly convey my sincere gratitude to the party faithful in Mopamuro LGA, Kogi West Senatorial District, and indeed the entire state, through your fellow LGAs party chairmen, for their support and camaraderie, over the years.

“I look forward to our continued friendship, despite the fact that I am no longer a member of your party,” he stated.

Awoniyi did not give specific reasons for his exit from PDP but he along with many other stakeholders in the party were dissatisfied with the conduct of the party’s governorship primaries that led to the emergence of Senator Melaye as the party’s governorship candidate.

Awoniyi who was also interested in the party’s ticket described the exercise as a “farce”.

Though he has not opened up on his next inclination following his resignation from the PDP, there are speculations in Kogi State that Awoniyi may be headed for the All Progressives Congress, APC.
