UNIJOS Students Protest Tuition Hike

Students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), on Tuesday, blocked roads leading to the school’s campus in protest against the hike in school fees.

Mobilized by the leaders of the university’s Students Union Government (SUG), the protesting students requested an immediate reversal of the recent increase in school fees and other services rendered by the institution.

The student protesters were armed with placards bearing several inscriptions including “We don’t want to drop out of school” and “If your children can afford the money, we can’t”, among others.

The protesters lamented the difficulties Nigerians were already experiencing, urging the management to aggravate the situation.

GWG.ng reports that the UNIJOS protests came after students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) last Wednesday protested the increase in school fees by the university’s management. UNILAG’s management in July 2023 announced an increase in fees, stating “Proposed fees for undergraduate students at Unilag were disclosed. Students without lab or studio use would pay N100,750, those with lab use would pay N140,250 and College of Medicine undergraduates would pay N190,250.

The Federal Government in its response to the concerns raised over the raised school fees had said that indigent students would be accommodated by the new school loans programme that is being worked out by the new administration.
