5 Reasons You Still Struggle To Sleep

Published

on

Struggling to sleep is not a new phenomenon. However, not so many people have an adequate understanding of why they struggle with sleep.

Instead of trying to suppress the struggles with sleeping pills, knowing the reasons behind your inability to sleep will help you manage the triggers better.

In this article are reasons you are struggling to sleep.

1. An unsettled mind

According to research, higher frequencies of mind wandering and daydreaming were associated with poorer sleep quality, particularly with poor subjective sleep quality and increased sleep latency, night-time disturbance, daytime dysfunction and daytime sleepiness.- In other words, when your mind is still active even while asleep, it will be less possible to have a quality sleep. Therefore, before you take that pill or beat yourself up for going through this, find out your mind’s state.

2. Signs of a medical condition

Sometimes, struggling to sleep can be a sign of an underlining medical issue that you might need to consult a doctor for. Next time you notice you are struggling to sleep without successfully identifying the trigger, you should consult your doctor.

3. Drug abuse

The abnormal use of drugs could cause your body to react in such a manner that it could completely ruin your sleep. Abuse of sleeping pills could also make things worse. If this is the case, seeking medical counselling and speaking with a therapist might help address the sleeplessness.

4. Job demands

The body naturally gives in to sleep, especially at night, so when you have to work overnight, this gets in the way of your body doing what it is naturally meant to do at night, which may cause sleepless nights. Things could get worse if you do not find a way to make up for your sleepless nights during the day.

5. Altered function of the bedroom

You will likely experience sleeplessness when your bedroom begins to have other functions apart from what it is designed for. For example, having a television set in your bedroom could do quite a number on your sleeping patterns, also having a bookshelf or a reading table or a library space in your room.
