Suspense As NLC Officials Take Decision On Indefinite Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to make the crucial decision regarding its proposed indefinite strike during an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for today, Tuesday.

This announcement came from the NLC’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, who urged the presidents, general secretaries, and treasurers of affiliated unions to participate in this virtual session. The meeting notice was dated September 22, 2023.

The NEC comprises all associate union presidents, general secretaries, treasurers, state chairpersons, and secretaries of NLC state councils, along with the chairperson of the NLC Youth Committee and members of the National Administrative Council.

This development follows a two-day warning strike held by the NLC on September 5 and 6, serving as a prelude to the proposed indefinite strike aimed at advancing the union’s demands.

One of the primary demands put forward by the NLC includes wage increases, palliative care, tax breaks, and allowances for public sector workers, as well as a revision of the minimum wage. To exert pressure on the federal government to address these demands, the NLC may consider adopting dramatic measures.

According to a high-ranking union official, the NLC remains steadfast in its pursuit of these demands, and the outcome of the NEC meeting will determine whether the strike will proceed.

The official emphasized the government’s responsibility to take appropriate action, citing the four-month period since the removal of the petrol subsidy and private sector employers’ concerns about the potential repercussions of a labor action. The impending NLC strike is expected to have widespread consequences, affecting not only the private sector but all sectors of the economy and hence apprehension over the decision to be taken.
