Nigerian singer Simi, whose real name is Simisola Kosoko, has taken influencers Ashmusy and Nons Miraj to task over their recent video portraying African mothers.

The video, shared by Ashmusy, featured skit makers dressed as elderly mothers, behaving in a manner that Simi found distasteful.

In the video, Ashmusy, Nons Miraj, and their fellow skit makers were depicted as older women dining in a restaurant, eating hastily, and taking pictures, mimicking the behavior of elderly individuals at events. Simi, however, did not find the portrayal accurate or humorous.

Expressing her frustration on Twitter, Simi criticized the video, calling it a “mess.” She stated that the behavior depicted in the video did not align with the reality she knows, emphasizing that she does not personally know any mothers who behave in such a manner.

Simi’s comments sparked discussions online, with many users weighing in on the portrayal of African mothers in comedy sketches. The incident has ignited a conversation about the responsibility of content creators to avoid perpetuating stereotypes and misrepresentations, especially when it comes to cultural contexts and African mothers of whom Simi believes she is a good example.
