A Diaspora group, Progressive Edolites, has endorsed Chief Clem Agba, the former Minister of Budget and National Planning, as its preferred aspirant for the 2024 Edo governorship election.

This is contained in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the group, Mr Roland Omorodion and the Secretary, Ms Rosaline Odiye and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

The group said that it took the decision when it hosted the former Minister in Holland at the weekend.

It said that the decision was based on Agba’s past records in public service.

‘’Our decision is not borne out of ethnicity, but based on his antecedent as a former Commissioner for Environment in Edo and also a former minister.

‘’Having followed the political trajectory of Agba, we are optimistic that he will right the wrong of the last seven years if given the mandate to govern the state,” the Progressive Edolites said.

‘’We are not happy with the current situation in the state and we appeal to the people to avoid the mistake of the last seven years and elect someone who would enthrone good governance in the state,’’ it said.

The group advised the people of the state to jettison the call to use the 2024 governorship poll to settle ethnic squabble.

‘’We mustn’t use the 2024 election to canvass support for any ethnic group, but use it to settle the developmental challenges in our state.

“The only way we can however enthrone this good governance that we all yearn for is to go for the best person who is abreast with the challenges confronting us as a people and a state.

“This is exactly what informed our decision to support Agba who has previously distinguished himself in the service of the state as a commissioner and the federation as a minister.

“Let’s not forget that he had a successful career in the private sector, specifically in the oil and gas sector,’’ it said.

The group added: “Our support is not just going to be words of mouth, we will also mobilise resources and set-up volunteers to canvass support for his aspiration across the nook and cranny of Edo.”

Responding, the former minister said he was in Holland on a quiet visit, but reiterated his desire to see to positive changes in Edo.

“I am glad that you have taken note of my modest contributions to the state and Nigeria in my capacity as a commissioner and minister respectively.

“Edo our dear state has the capacity to be in the same developmental trajectory as Lagos and it is our desire to see that the state is developed for the greater good of all,” he said. (NAN)
