Rotimi Amaechi’s Silent Role In Wike – Fabura Fight Emerges

The quiet role of the penultimate governor of Rivers State, Mr Rotimi Amaechi in the evolving feud between Governor Simi Fubara and his immediate predecessor and godfather, Nyesom Wike has emerged.

Opunabo Inko-Tariah who served as media aide to Wike while governor of Rivers State revealed what he disclosed as the Amaechi factor on Wednesday morning as he also traced the crisis to the appointment of five new commissioners by Fabura without the approval of Wike.

Speaking on AIT’s Kakaaki programme on Wednesday morning monitored by GWG.ng, Inko-Tariah disclosed that Governor Fabura’s decision to restart the Songhai Farms initiated by Amaechi while governor but abandoned by Wike was a primary reason for the faceoff between the incumbent and preceding governors of the state.

He said:

“It is a question of the governor of the state trying to resist the pestilence of godfatherism. You can imagine a situation where his chief of staff, ADC to the governor and his personal aides were all nominated by his predecessor. Whatever steps the governor will take he has to get an imprimatur from his predecessor. For example even the signing of mandates. The governor was pushed to the wall, some said he was Personal Assistant to the former governor.

On how the Amaechi factor propped into the crisis between Wike and Fubara, the former media aide said:

“I think the issue of the Songhai Farms, his plan to resuscitate the farm, because the Songhai Farms was to generate employment for Rivers people and also generate funds for Rivers people. The Songhai Farms was set up by Rotimi Chibuke Amaechi and this is a governor that is not interested in the problems that were there before now. So, whoever set up that farm was immaterial and for eight years was in limbo. Nothing happened and deliberately so because no money was pumped into it.

“So, the governor felt that this farm will generate revenue for the state and also employ Rivers people and that infuriated the former governor ‘are you calling me a bad man, are you saying I didn’t know what I was doing when I abandoned that farm?

Also speaking on Fabura’s decision to appoint new commissioners without Wike’s approval, he said:

“We also talk of the appointment of commissioners, about five of them, without getting clearance and the former governor was angry, how will you appoint commissioners without getting clearance. This was just the climax,” he said.
