A 73-year-old man, simply identified as Nyeche has been released after spending an astounding 13 years and eight months in prison without a trial following his arrest by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following the intervention of the Headfort Foundation.’

Arrested at the age of 60, Nyeche’s case came to the attention of the Herdfort Foundation when a church member involved in a prison outreach program alerted them to his situation in March 2022. According to the foundation’s statement, Nyeche’s case file had gone missing and was not presented before any court between 2019 and 2023.

The foundation traced his file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office and brought him before a court on October 20, 2023, where he was re-arraigned for the crime of stealing. The Headfort Foundation argued for Nyeche’s release, contending that he had already served more than the prescribed sentence for the crime if found guilty.

In response, the EFCC requested an adjournment to prepare for trial, and the court granted the request. Headfort foundation’s lawyer applied for Nyeche’s bail, assuring the court of his presence on the next adjourned date. The court granted the bail application, and on October 20, 2023, after 13 years and 8 months, Nyeche finally experienced freedom.
