Concern Over Alleged New Plot To Re-Arrest Emefiele

The Nigerian Patriotic Forum (NPF) has voiced deep concern over emerging reports suggesting that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is contemplating the re-arrest of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, despite a court order granting him bail.

In a statement released in Abuja, NPF President Samuel Lawson Ajibade underscored the critical importance of upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary. He emphasized that the judiciary is the cornerstone of hope for every Nigerian, regardless of social standing.

Ajibade expressed apprehension over indications that the EFCC might pursue this course of action, purportedly with presidential approval to disregard the court order. With Emefiele having endured 151 days in detention, the NPF finds this development alarming, raising profound concerns about the potential erosion of fundamental democratic principles and the overall state of Nigeria’s democracy.

“Our nation has made significant strides in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the rights of its citizens. However, any actions that compromise the independence of the judiciary and disregard court orders pose a direct threat to our democracy,” added Ajibade.

The NPF’s statement also includes an earnest appeal to the international community and business sectors to focus attention on Emefiele’s situation amid the alleged plans to re-arrest him. The NPF warned of potential chaos if the ‘rule of man’ supersedes the ‘rule of law,’ creating adverse impacts on the business environment.

“We call on the international community and business sectors to turn their gaze towards Emefiele’s plight and assist in preventing Nigeria from sliding into anarchy. Sustainable business operations require an environment where the rule of law prevails over the rule of man,” emphasized Ajibade.
