President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulation

The Lamidi Apapa-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has urged former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to follow the example of Liberian President George Weah and congratulate President Bola Tinubu on the 2023 presidential election.

The faction through its National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, emphasized the need for Obi and Atiku to display sportsmanship and collaborate with President Tinubu in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the statement, the Labour Party commended President Weah for conceding defeat to the opposition leader Joseph Boakai in the Liberian Presidential Election. The party urged African leaders, especially Nigerian politicians, to adopt a similar spirit of sportsmanship.

The statement highlighted that elections produce both winners and losers, emphasizing the importance of magnanimity in victory and sportsmanship in defeat. It encouraged leaders to explore all available legal processes and opportunities, respecting the decisions made by the electorate.

The Apapa-led faction pointed out that President Weah’s acceptance of the voters’ decision in Liberia showcased the true spirit of democracy and then called on Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to follow suit, and congratulate President Tinubu.

The party stressed that with the Supreme Court ruling affirming the legitimacy of President Tinubu’s administration, electoral litigation should come to an end. It urged Peter Obi to stop contesting the verdict and encouraged both Obi and Atiku to congratulate President Tinubu, joining hands to revitalize the economy and deliver democratic dividends to Nigerians.

The statement concluded with a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., emphasizing the significance of speaking out about matters that impact the nation. The Labour Party appealed to the former presidential candidates to unite in congratulating President Tinubu for the sake of a united Nigeria facing political and economic challenges.
