Ahead of his trial, Spanish prosecutors are seeking a nine-year jail term for former Brazil star Dani Alves who is accused of raping a young woman at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022.

Prosecutors are seeking charges against the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain full-back, who has been in Spanish jail since his January arrest. The indictment, viewed by AFP on Thursday, reveals the demand for 150,000 euros ($163,500) in compensation for the alleged victim.

A trial date is pending for the 40-year-old, who continues to assert that he engaged in consensual sex with the accuser. In a June interview with La Vanguardia, Alves stated, “I have a really clear conscience regarding what happened that night in the bathroom of the VIP area of the Sutton nightclub.” He insisted that he did not force the woman into any actions against her will.

Initially denying knowledge of the complainant in a television interview before his arrest, Alves later admitted to lying, expressing fear that his wife might leave him if he acknowledged involvement with another woman.

The indictment that paved the way for the trial of Dani Alves provides a detailed account of the events at the upscale Sutton nightclub. After meeting at the venue, Alves invited the woman into a small enclosure, unaware it was a toilet. Once inside, he allegedly displayed a “violent attitude,” forcing intercourse despite her resistance.

During the incident, Alves was on holiday in Barcelona after participating in the World Cup in Qatar. Following his arrest, he was dismissed from his position at Mexican club Pumas UNAM. Dani Alves, with an illustrious career, boasts 42 trophies, including three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil may see all these now consumed by the coming trial.
