The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu on Monday morning waved aside injunctions from Governor Godwin Obaseki and formally declared his interest in the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP saying he is a complete homeboy conscious of the pains of the Edo people.

He made his formal declaration from his campaign office after he had been locked out of the Enterno Hotel, the original venue he had proposed for the declaration.

GWG.ng reports that the brief but punchy ceremony was graced with several of his supporters but no recognizable government personality.

His declaration was full of traits of his familiarity with the people as he sought to draw a line with Asue Ighodalo, the Lagos-based lawyer who has been widely reported to be Obaseki’s choice as successor.

He said:

“As your deputy governor in the last seven years, I have had the privilege of working closely with our amiable governor, Godwin Obaseki, to lay a solid foundation for the progress in Edo State,” he said.

After making the declaration in a public address that was also relayed on some television networks, Comrade Shaibu followed through to inaugurate his campaign office.

Speaking at the campaign office he said: “The project for me to be the governor of Edo State is not just mine; it’s a collective one. We have decided in Edo State that original own boy, 100 per cent, has to be the governor of Edo State.

“After all the consultations we have made, we needed to now make the answer to our consultation known to our people. And the answer is clear: they have asked me to run.”

Concluding the speech, he said:

“I am Philip Shaibu, Your Guy. Your One Hundred Percent Homeboy!”

GWG.ng reports that having declared for the governorship, that Shaibu has now properly positioned himself in what promises to be a dogged political combat with Obaseki who had earlier been reported not to be inclined in passing on power to Edo North.
