A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sunday Okoebor was on Tuesday shot dead by a 10-man gang in Asaba, Delta State.

However, the criminals faced a setback as the Nigeria Army from 63 Brigade intervened, arresting eight of them. Two of the criminals were incapacitated, and two managed to escape.

Colonel Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff headquarters, 63 Brigade Asaba, disclosed that his men received information about the killing in the Koka area and swiftly mobilized to the scene. The soldiers, along with the police “Operation Hawk,” engaged in a firefight with the criminals. Unfortunately, a gang member known as Aminu shot DSP Okoebor at close range, resulting in his immediate death. Two criminals escaped with pump-action rifles.

“We incapacitated two, two escaped, and we were able to arrest an additional six. We also arrested 125 at their hideouts out of which eight were identified as robbers,” explained Col Gambari. The arrested individuals will be handed over to the police as part of “Operation Still Water” to ensure a safe environment, particularly during the ember months, and maintain peace.

The recovered items from the criminals included a pistol gun, laptops, jewelry, phones, and other electronic gadgets. The joint efforts of the army and police aimed at curbing criminal activities and ensuring the safety of the community.

The death of DSP Okoebor adds to the casualties suffered by the police in its continuing role of keeping watch over the citizenry.
