Partner Flees As 70-Year-Old Woman Becomes Oldest African To Welcome Twins

A historic milestone was unfolded in Uganda after 70-year-old Ugandan woman Safina Namukwaya became the oldest African to successfully give birth through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment.

After a 40-year wait, Namukwaya welcomed a set of twins, a boy and a girl, at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, Uganda.

The Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre celebrated the delivery on Wednesday via its Facebook page, recognizing Namukwaya’s courage and resilience. The announcement emphasized that this achievement extends beyond medical success, highlighting the strength of the human spirit.

In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), a technique aiding individuals with fertility challenges in conceiving, involves fertilizing an egg with sperm under controlled laboratory conditions. The fertilized egg, or embryo, is then returned to the woman’s womb to develop.

Namukwaya, speaking to a privately owned NTV channel, shared that this was her second delivery in three years, having given birth to a girl in 2020. She faced numerous challenges during the pregnancy, including the desertion by the children’s father. Namukwaya expressed concerns about raising the children, stating that her partner had not shown up since her admission.

Despite difficulties and societal judgments, Namukwaya remains joyful to have her children after enduring years of stigma for being childless. Her resilience is evident as she faced ridicule and abuse, with people even suggesting she had been cursed.

Namukwaya’s case, while rare, echoes similar instances of women giving birth at advanced ages. In 2019, Erramatti Mangayamma from India, at the age of 74, gave birth to twins through IVF, setting a record as the world’s oldest mother. Mangayamma welcomed two healthy baby girls with her husband of 57 years, Sitarama Rajarao, by her side.
