Twitter is abuzz after Peter Obi took President Bola Tinubu to task over his outing at the COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai with a 1,411-man delegation that put Lagos socialite, Toke Makinwa as number 7 on the Nigerian list.

GWG.ng reports that Obi in a series of tweets, pointed out the irony of Nigeria matching China’s delegation size at COP28, despite vast differences in budget and Human Development Index (HDI). China’s 2024 budget is $4 trillion, approximately $2,860 per head, with a higher HDI ranking of 79 out of 191 countries, while Nigeria’s budget is $33 billion, around $165 per head, with a lower HDI ranking of 163.

Obi highlighted that Nigeria has more people in ‘Multi-Dimensional’ poverty than China, despite China having seven times the population.

In a tone that many have insinuated as a link to the presence of Toke Makinwa in the Tinubu delegation to COP28, Peter Obi criticized the composition of Nigeria’s delegation, noting that many are non-relevant civil servants or associates of government officials who lack understanding of climate change.

He expressed concern about the public expense incurred when many Nigerians face economic hardships.

Calling for a shift in priorities, Obi urged Nigeria to focus on productivity and reducing poverty, emphasizing the need to end wasteful government practices. He advocated for cutting the cost of governance, investing in production, and aligning spending with necessity and national priorities. In conclusion, he expressed hope for a new Nigeria by embracing reasonable and necessary actions.

The tweet by Obi on COP28 was followed by comments by netizens who then dragged Toke Makinwa into the issues raised by the Labour Party presidential candidate on the Tinubu delegation.

GWG.ng gathered some of the reactions.
