The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared its commitment to opposing the surge in school fees across tertiary institutions.

NANS President, Lucky Emonefe made this assertion against the school fees hike during a press conference in Abuja, where he was joined by student leaders, including newly-elected NANS Senate President Afeez Akinteye.

Emonefe pledged that his administration at NANS would actively resist the escalation of school fees in tertiary institutions nationwide. He emphasized NANS’s determination to protect the interests of Nigerian students comprehensively.

Calling for unity within the association, especially among members dissatisfied with the recent election results in Abuja, Emonefe highlighted the benefits a united NANS would bring to Nigerian students.

Expressing gratitude for being elected as the president to represent the interests of Nigerian students nationally, Emonefe addressed the recent increase in school fees, citing a case at the University of Calabar. He disclosed that the zonal and state student leaders were mandated to intervene, and if unsuccessful, his administration would step in for the welfare of Nigerian students.

During the press conference, runner-ups Edom John, Stephen Edidiong, Boniface Emesowun, and Enomfon Umoisien, along with NANS Senate President-elect Afeez Akinteye and Clerk-elect Oladimeji Uthman, expressed their support for Emonefe, recognizing him as the duly-elected NANS President.

Recall that in the election held on December 2, eight candidates from the South-South region, including Lucky Emonefe, contested, resulting in Emonefe’s victory.
