Edo 2024: Ize-Iyamu Redefines APC Race With New Arrangement

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s entry into the Edo State governorship contest race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC is reshapping the contest for the ticket of the opposition party in the state. However, unlike the past two attempts when he easily got the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in 2016 and APC in 2020 almost without opposition, pastor is this time facing his first major challenge for a political party ticket in Edo State.

It was, however, not unexpected especially given his delay in entering the race which paved way for many other minions to enter the contest.

However, political stakeholders still project Pastor Ize-Iyamu to be the frontrunner in the APC.

Among the more formidable ones on the platform of the APC that have joined the race are Rep. Denis Idahosa, Senator Osehrienmen Osunbor, General Charles Airhavbre, Prince Clem Agba and the chairman of the state chapter of the APC, Col Dave Imuse.

Stakeholders are, however, narrowing the contest to a straight fight between Idahosa and Ize-Iyamu.

Unlike 2020 when Oshiomhole backed Ize-Iyamu for both the APC ticket and the main election, the former governor is now believed to be cold towards the 2020 candidate having reportedly been looking towards another contender from Edo South.

However, some speculate that Oshiomhole could easily settle down to Ize-Iyamu should the momentum begin to gravitate towards the Redeemed Church pastor. In that respect, it is believed that Oshiomhole would push his protege, Clem Agba as a running mate.

The challenge for Ize-Iyamu, however, is coming from some of the older elements aligned with Oshiomhole who are looking towards Idahosa who has increasingly won the hearts of APC faithful with his electoral viability in his constituency.

GWG.ng reports that Idahsoa won himself admiration after defeating Chief Gabriel Igbinedion’s daughter twice in the Ovia Federal Constituency in 2019 and 2023.

However, his capacity to navigate the odds across the state in the days ahead will be the challenge for him as he confronts the Ize-Iyamu machine for the APC ticket.
