Osimhen Opens Up On How Amunike, Drogba Helped Him Win Footballer Of The Year Award

In a historic victory, Nigerian Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has triumphed over a 24-year jinx, securing the prestigious 2023 African Footballer of the Year award at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday.

Expressing gratitude during the award presentation, Osimhen credited Emmanuel Amunike for his pivotal role in his journey, stating, “I want to appreciate Emmanuel Amunike; without him, I would not be here.” He also acknowledged Drogba as his role model.

In a testament to Nigeria’s football prowess, Victor Osimhen also extended congratulations to Chiamaka Nnadozie and Asisat Oshoala for their respective awards at the Footballer Awards night, emphasizing the abundance of talent in Nigeria in the year, 2023. He confidently declared, “It shows that Nigeria has a bunch of talents, and I think we are just getting started. There is more to come.”

At the same ceremony, Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala clinched the Women’s African Footballer of the Year award for the sixth time, while Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie secured the 2023 Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Nnadozie, reflecting on her achievement, shared, “My Dad never wanted me to play football, but I am sure he will be proud of me tonight.”

Also adding to the Footballer of the year award won by Victor Osimhen, Nnadozie and Asissat Oshoala, the Super Falcons were named the National Team of the Year in the women’s category. NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, who received the CAF 2023 Women’s National Team of the Year award, dedicated the recognition to all women’s national teams across Africa.
