Manchester City’s Treble winner, Erling Haaland, is set to compete against Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe for the FIFA Men’s Best Player title in 2023.

Initially shortlisted in September, the list of FIFA Player of the year that included 2022 winner Messi and 11 others has been narrowed down with the exclusion of players like Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Victor Osimhen, and Declan Rice.

A panel of experts initially selected the nominees, but the final three contenders were determined by an international jury consisting of men’s national team coaches, captains, journalists, and fans who cast their votes on FIFA’s website.

Messi, defending his FIFA 2022 Best Men’s Player title, now seeks another win after leading Argentina to World Cup success and securing Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

Despite Mbappe’s impressive performance in the World Cup, where he led France to a final and was PSG’s top scorer for their league victory, he faces stiff competition from Haaland. The Norwegian striker played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s triumphant 2022/23 season, contributing 52 goals, setting records, and securing the Premier League Golden Boot with 36 goals.
