The much-anticipated top-of-the-table clash between Manchester City and Arsenal at Etihad ended in rather disappointing fashion for neutrals as it ended in a 0-0 stalemate with the host’s fiery attackers led by Erling Haaland marked out.

It was a chance for Arsenal to reclaim top spot in the Premier League and also an opportunity for City to cut Liverpool’s gap at the top to just one point.

The first half was pretty much evenly balanced as both teams looked to show too much respect to each other. No risks were taken and they both tried to stay compact. Despite City having majority of the possession, they only managed the same attempts on target as their visitors -1. Gabriel Jesus had a couple of attempts to score against his former side but shot his two efforts wide.

Arsenal brought on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli in the second half but to no avail as the former fired a tame effort which was saved by Stefan Ortega. Erling Haaland barely had a kick and missed the ball completely when Josko Gvardiol’s knockdown seemed to open it up for him to finish Arsenal with six minutes to play.

The result extends Man City’s unbeaten home record to a remarkable 39 games, so Arsenal may see positives in taking a point away. But after beating City in both the Community Shield and in the Premier League at the Emirates, their failure to do the treble over Pep Guardiola’s men means they are now two points behind Liverpool. City are a place and a point further back.
