Nigerian stand-up comedian Okey Bakassi recently disclosed a distressing incident where he was attacked at a wedding event in Owerri, Imo State. Serving as the event’s MC, Bakassi was physically attacked after suggesting a free flow of photographs during the wedding celebrations.

In an Instagram video, Bakassi shared the details, explaining how his “attackers” obstructed other guests from taking photos with the couple while engaging in conversation with the groom. MC Bakassi alleged that post-event, one of the men physically attacked him.

“Something happened to me today that I have not experienced in whole 30 years of being a professional MC and in the entertainment industry,” he expressed.

Bakassi recounted the events, describing how he invited people to snap pictures after the cake-cutting ceremony. He emphasized that the altercation started when he asked a group of young men, who had finished taking pictures, to step aside so that other guests could continue the flow of the photo session.

The situation escalated as the young men reacted with threats, escalating to a physical altercation. “It looked like these young men were boiling for a fight. They shoved me on their way out. I did not alter a word. My professional training, I was not trained to go into altercations with somebody at an event like that,” Bakassi explained.

He further detailed the unprovoked threat he received, “do you want something to happen to you in this Owerri?” Recognizing the escalating tension, Bakassi wisely stepped aside to avoid confrontation.

The comedian expressed his gratitude for the timely intervention of the Imo State director of DSS and the DSS personnel who escorted him back to his hotel. Despite the traumatic experience, Bakassi is determined to seek justice. “Nobody knows what plans they had and what would have happened, but I will let the police do their job, there’s no way I won’t get justice,” he affirmed.

This incident sheds light on the challenges faced by professionals in the entertainment industry, emphasizing the need for a secure and respectful environment in which they can carry out their responsibilities without fear of violence or intimidation.
