Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has vehemently condemned the killing of Malam Muhammad Bello, a truck driver transporting humanitarian items to a neighboring country by a soldier at a check point.

The tragic incident occurred along Dikwa-Gamboru Ngala Road in Dikwa Local Government Area. Allegedly, a soldier fatally beat Bello for refusing to offer a bribe to him and a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) member at a checkpoint. The driver had reportedly insisted on his way after presenting proper clearance papers.

Represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Dr. Bukar Tijani at a press conference in Maiduguri on Thursday, Governor Zulum expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). He emphasized the government’s unequivocal disapproval of such incidents and fervently prayed for their prevention in the future.

Governor Zulum urged NURTW members and the public to consider the incident as an aberration deserving condemnation, urging patience during this trying time. He stated, “The Borno State Government received the sad news of the killing of a truck driver on Tuesday, 26th December 2023, along Gamboru-Ngala Road, with utter shock, anguish, and dismay.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army’s 7 Division has confirmed the arrest of the soldier implicated in the driver’s death. The Army, through Public Relations Officer Lt. Col. A.Y. Jingina, acknowledged receiving a complaint from NURTW and has initiated an investigation into the matter. Jingina assured both the family of the deceased and NURTW that justice would be served, emphasizing the Division’s commitment to professionalism and adherence to the law in addressing such issues.

“The Division wishes to once again reassure the members of the general public that we will remain resolute and professional in the joint effort to tackle insecurity in Borno State,” stated Jingina. The arrest of the soldier underscores the Division’s dedication to ensuring justice and maintaining professional conduct within its ranks.
