iPhone Survives 16,000-Foot Fall From Alaska Airlines Flight
An iPhone took an unexpected 16,000-foot plunge from an Alaska Airlines flight, surviving the fall unscathed with no cracks on the screen and a battery still half-charged.
The incident occurred when a fuselage panel blew off Flight 1282, prompting an emergency landing, ensuring the safety of all passengers.
Debris, including AirPods and a boy’s shirt, dramatically landed outside the depressurized cabin. Sean Bates discovered an iPhone on the side of the road in Washington during the search for debris. The intact screen, a charged 44% battery, and a $70 baggage receipt were visible in a photo posted on social media, showcasing the phone’s resilience even after the harrowing fall.
Despite the charger port being damaged, the iPhone remained in flight mode, and Bates shared a TikTok post describing the phone as “pretty clean, no scratches on it, sitting under a bush.” Bates reported the discovery to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), learning that it was the second phone from the flight to be found.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy expressed gratitude to Bates and offered to meet in response to his post. During a briefing, Homendy emphasized the fortune that the incident did not result in tragedy, stating that the NTSB would examine the phones and then return them.
As a precaution, regulatory bodies promptly grounded specific versions of Boeing’s 737 MAX 9 jet pending inspections following the incident. The impact on Boeing’s stocks was notable, experiencing a plunge in trading on the subsequent Monday.
