Pope Francis Leads Campaign For Global Ban On Surrogacy

Pope on surrogacy

Pope Francis has passionately called for a worldwide ban on surrogacy, denouncing the practice as “deplorable.” The pontiff, now 87, made the plea during his New Year’s address to diplomats at the Vatican, where he underscored surrogacy’s status as a “grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child.”

Expressing deep concern for the potential exploitation of women involved in surrogacy, the Pope shed light on the material needs that might drive some women to become surrogate mothers. He emphasized the inherent dignity of each child, asserting that a child should never be treated as an item in a commercial transaction but rather as a precious gift.

Calling on the international community to take decisive action, Pope Francis urged for a universal prohibition of surrogacy. His address, which centered on themes of peace and the sanctity of life, reiterated his steadfast belief that the sanctity of life begins at conception. He condemned any actions that reduce the unborn child to the status of a commodity, emphasizing the moral responsibility to protect and honor life in all its stages.

While this condemnation is not a new stance for Pope Francis, who labeled surrogacy as “inhuman” in June 2022, his recent plea reinforces his unwavering commitment to ending all forms of surrogacy globally. Even in countries with “altruistic” surrogacy arrangements, where no financial compensation is provided aside from expenses, and in nations allowing commercial surrogacy, the Pope’s message remains clear: a universal effort is needed to halt this practice and protect the sanctity of life.
