Former President Muhammadu Buhari took center stage at the unveiling of books chronicling his presidency, expressing gratitude and offering a rare apology for the tough decisions made during his tenure.

The event at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja saw the launch of two significant publications: “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, 2015 – 2023” and “Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy (2015 – 2023).”

In his first public appearance since leaving office on May 29, 2023, Buhari acknowledged the challenges faced by his administration and the difficult choices that ensued. He expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him, including current President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Buhari’s address included a moment of humility as he apologized to those who felt the impact of the tough decisions, emphasizing that there was never an intention to cause pain or anguish. He recognized the sacrifices made by the Nigerian populace and stated, “Sacrifices are still being made now, and will continue to be part of our national life and development.”

Highlighting the importance of the publications in preserving the history of his administration, Buhari stressed the sanctity of records, documenting facts, achievements, and milestones of the nation. In a conversation with Femi Adesina, his former Media Adviser and one of the authors, Buhari underscored the significance of recorded history in countering attempts to distort or obliterate it.

Buhari portrayed governance as a continuum, likening it to a relay race where one runs their course and hands over the baton to the next person. He expressed support and confidence in President Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing their shared vision for Nigeria. The former president concluded by thanking supporters and reaffirming his commitment to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), expressing faith in the strength, unity, and future of Nigeria.

This unique blend of reflection, gratitude, and a rare apology paints a nuanced picture of Buhari’s leadership style, acknowledging challenges while expressing optimism for Nigeria’s future under new leadership.
