The national leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has called on the Federal government to take decisive action against the activities of illegal miners across the country. In a heartfelt statement issued in Akure, the Ondo state capital, Fasoranti expressed his concern, emphasizing that Nigeria and its people have endured enough suffering due to the actions of illegal miners.

The statement, signed by Otunba Kole Omololu, conveyed condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde, the government, and the people of Ibadan, particularly those in Oyo state. Fasoranti expressed shock and sadness over the explosion that occurred in the ancient city, leading to loss of lives, injuries, property destruction, and disruption of daily activities.

As the number of injured persons continued to rise, Fasoranti extended sympathy to the affected families, urging prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and swift recovery for the injured. He echoed Governor Makinde’s assertion that illegal mining activities were responsible for the explosion, stressing the need to address this issue not only in Ibadan or Oyo state but nationwide.

Highlighting the need for organized mining activities governed by law, Fasoranti stressed that the proceeds should benefit the country and its citizens instead of ending up in private pockets. He expressed concern that illegal mining activities have contributed to insecurity in some parts of the country and urged vigilance to prevent its spread.

Fasoranti called on the government to expose and hold all illegal miners accountable. He expressed support for Governor Makinde’s commitment to bringing those responsible for the disaster to justice and called for federal government assistance due to the magnitude of the disaster. Fasoranti emphasized that the burden should not rest solely on the Oyo state government and urged collective efforts to prevent a recurrence of such devastating events.

In conclusion, Fasoranti affirmed that justice must be served to both the victims and the culprits, expressing appreciation for Governor Makinde’s efforts while calling for broader assistance to address the aftermath of the disaster.
