A soldier from the 35 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, stationed in Abeokuta whose identity remains undisclosed, met a tragic end as a result of a fatal accident, 81 Division spokesman, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni has said.

The circumstances surrounding the soldier’s demise took a distressing turn when he accidentally shot himself in the head. His colleagues, alerted by the gunshot, discovered the devastating scene where he laid in a pool of blood. Promptly, an investigation was launched to unravel the details and potential factors contributing to this unfortunate event.

In an effort to address circulating rumors on social media, Lt.-Col. Ayeni clarified that the incident had no connection to issues of non-payment of Ration Cash Allowance. The late soldier had been assigned to the Brigade Standby Force on January 15th, alongside his peers, with assurances of adequate provisions in line with the Nigerian Army’s standards for troops on duty.

Expressing deep concern over the misuse of this tragic occurrence to tarnish the Nigerian Army’s reputation, the division took proactive steps. The Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade personally communicated with the family of the deceased, extending heartfelt condolences and sympathy during this challenging time.

Lt.-Col. Ayeni, in reiterating the division’s commitment to the welfare of its troops, vehemently dismissed any insinuations that the army would neglect the morale and well-being of its soldiers. The incident remains under investigation, shedding light on the critical importance of supporting military personnel and dispelling misinformation that could harm the reputation of the armed forces.
