Father Testifies At Trial Of Suspects In Chrisland School Death

Mr. Michael Adeniran, the father of a late student at Chrisland Schools, Ikeja, shared a heart-wrenching account in an Ikeja High Court on Monday. He revealed that his 12-year-old daughter died during the school’s inter-house sports event held at a stadium.

In a sorrowful narrative, Adeniran recalled how the school’s nurse informed him that his daughter was already lifeless in the stadium before being rushed to the hospital. The nurse, unable to pronounce her dead as she wasn’t a doctor, described the dilated eyes of the young girl.

This tragic incident led to legal action, with the Lagos State Government charging Chrisland School Ltd., Opebi, and several individuals, including the principal, vice-principal, and others, for involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts. The charges stemmed from the alleged electrocution of the student during the inter-house sports event at the Agege Stadium on February 9, 2023.

During cross-examination as the first prosecution witness, Adeniran expressed difficulty recalling if oxygen was administered to his daughter at the hospital. He mentioned that his daughter was absent from school on February 2, 2023, but not due to illness. Instead, she had been reported ill on January 20, 2023, and taken to Inland Specialist Hospital, where prescribed drugs included Nitrazepam and Amitriptyline.

Addressing inquiries about the cause of death, Adeniran noted that Agege Central Hospital and Diagnostic Ltd. informed him of cardiac arrest. However, he couldn’t recollect if the school’s nurse mentioned administering oxygen or cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

“The nurse said she tried all she could but my daughter had already died before being taken out of the stadium. She said her eyes had already dilated, but she could not pronounce her dead because she was not a doctor,” he shared, highlighting the emotional toll of the tragic event.

The court proceedings are set to continue on January 24, as the family seeks justice for their devastating loss.
