A renewed sectarian crisis has struck fear into the hearts of many residents, with reports of fatalities and widespread destruction of buildings, including churches and mosques, in the Sabon Gari area of Mangu local government, Plateau State.

Pansak Lazarus, an eyewitness and member of the affected community, shared with journalists that the exact number of casualties remains uncertain at this point. He conveyed the grim reality of the situation, stating, ā€œI cannot give you the exact number of people killed, but many were killed, more than 15 houses were burnt, as well as several shops destroyed.ā€

In response to the crisis, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, addressed the public, urging calm and assuring that law enforcement is actively managing the situation.

Captain James Oya, Media Officer of the Special Task Force (STF) responsible for security in Plateau, Bauchi, and parts of Southern Kaduna (Operation Safe Haven), confirmed the attack. However, he refrained from disclosing casualty figures, emphasizing that OPSH troops are on-site, working to restore order. Notably, he mentioned that normalcy has been reestablished in the affected area.

Earlier on, Governor Caleb Mutfwang declared a 24-hour curfew in Mangu Local Government Area, responding to the escalating security concerns. The announcement, issued by the director of press and public affairs in the governorā€™s office, Gyang Bere, detailed the restriction to essential duties only, urging compliance from residents. The governor emphasized the importance of citizens providing reliable information to support security personnel in their efforts to restore peace.

Governor Mutfwang expressed sympathy for the victims and their families, condemning those intent on disrupting the state’s peace despite government initiatives against terrorist activities. He assured residents that the curfew would be subject to review once the security situation improves. The governor reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring lasting peace in the state.
