Police on Maintain explosion

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that the explosion near a refuse dump outside the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) premises in Maitama, Abuja, on January 24, 2024, was not connected to a bomb explosion, as alleged on social media.

In a statement, the FCT, Abuja Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, explained that an overheated metal refuse container activated under intense heat, causing the explosion around 11:45 am.

“The Police deployed a rapid response team and members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit to assess the situation. Preliminary findings suggested that the overheated metal refuse container exploded, causing injuries to two refuse evacuators currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital.

The FCT Police Command emphasized caution and urged the public to refrain from using metal refuse bins. Instead, they recommended the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal, as they pose a reduced risk of incidents related to overheated metal refuse containers.

This clarification aims to dispel misinformation circulating on social media and ensure the public’s awareness of the actual cause of the incident. The Police’s swift response and commitment to public safety are highlighted in their efforts to address the situation promptly.
