In the midst of escalating violence and unrest in Mangu town, Plateau State, a woman identified as Zainab found herself giving birth to a baby boy in the open. The chaos and insecurity in the area forced many residents to flee, leaving Zainab with minimal assistance during the delivery.

The 25-year-old mother of two shared her harrowing experience, explaining that the alarming sounds of gunfire and witnessing people being killed heightened her fear. Amid the chaos, she unexpectedly went into labor, and her baby was delivered while she stood in the open, without access to medical assistance or a conducive environment.

Zainab narrated her ordeal, expressing the challenges of delivering a baby without proper medical support. A neighbor, Shafa’atu, bravely stayed back to assist with the delivery amidst the prevailing violence. Zainab, now a mother of three, emphasized the lack of nearby medical facilities and the difficulties in seeking medical attention due to the ongoing curfew and insecurity.

She revealed the dire circumstances, saying, “There was no hospital nearby. Even right now, we couldn’t take the baby to the hospital due to the curfew, and my stomach has been hurting badly.”

Zainab’s plight reflects the broader impact of the unrest, with many families displaced and struggling to access essential services. Shafa’atu, who assisted during the delivery, shared her concerns about the safety of her own family members and orphans in her care amid the ongoing crisis.

Christian and Islamic religious leaders in the region have accused both the military and the vigilante group Operation Rainbow of taking sides in the conflict. The situation in Plateau State remains critical, with residents facing not only the immediate threats of violence but also the challenges of accessing healthcare and essential resources.
