The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has stood firm on its decision to implement Computer Based Testing (CBT) for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.

This was emphasized by Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, the Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, during a media briefing in Lagos.

Dr. Dangut reiterated the council’s commitment to innovation and maintaining its status as a world-class examining body, pointing out that the shift to CBT aligns with WAEC’s efforts to modernize and embrace technological advancements in educational assessments.

The inaugural CBT WASSCE for private candidates is set to unfold from January 31st to February 17th, 2024, spanning two weeks and four days.

For this groundbreaking series, a total of 8,285 candidates have registered, showcasing a gender distribution of 3,949 male candidates (47.66%) and 4,336 female candidates (52.3%). These candidates will be tested across 19 subjects, comprising 26 papers.

To ensure the integrity of the examination process, WAEC has taken proactive measures, including the training and registration of examination officials to serve as proctors. Additionally, the council has established an e-learning portal with preparatory materials for candidates tackling the CB-WASSCE, along with a tutorial video guiding candidates on navigating the examination portal, accessible on WAEC’s social media platforms.

Addressing concerns about students’ readiness, particularly in rural areas, for the CBT format, WAEC has conducted trial tests and a free mock examination for registered candidates, offering them a chance to familiarize themselves with the new system. The council has also undertaken inspections and equipped CBT centers nationwide with servers and necessary infrastructure to facilitate the smooth conduct of the exams.

WAEC’s unwavering commitment to the implementation of CBT underscores its dedication to progress and adaptability, ensuring that candidates are well-prepared for the evolving landscape of educational assessments.
