The Anambra State Government has arrested a 38-year-old woman named Chinyere for attempting to sell her nine-year-old and seven-year-old sons for the sum of N1 million each.

This shocking revelation unfolded as Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, addressed newsmen in Awka on Wednesday. Adding a disturbing layer to the situation, Chinyere’s 17-year-old eldest daughter was also arrested for her involvement in the appalling scheme.

Commissioner Obinabo, demonstrating strategic vigilance, posed as a potential buyer after catching wind of the disturbing transaction. Negotiations led to the reduction of the asking price from N2 million to an equally appalling N1.8 million. The mother-daughter duo, residing in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state, fell into the authorities’ trap in Awka, leading to their eventual arrest.

Mrs Obinabo strongly condemned such reprehensible acts, affirming the state government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating such crimes. The apprehended suspects are slated to be handed over to the police for prosecution, ensuring justice is served for this heinous attempt to commodify innocent lives.

Fielding questions from the press, the arrested mother, a native of Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra, attributed her dire actions to economic hardship. A widow with 11 children, Chinyere expressed that after her husband’s demise, providing adequate care and support for her large family became an insurmountable challenge. This disturbing attempt at child trafficking, she claimed, was prompted by her neighbor’s successful sale of one of her own children.

This revelation unearthed a tragic cycle of desperation and vulnerability. In an attempt to rationalize her actions, the accused mother disclosed that this was her first endeavor into the harrowing business of selling children, envisioning that the profits would also contribute to her eldest daughter’s tertiary education.

In response to the gravity of the situation, Commissioner Obinabo took immediate action to secure the welfare of the suspect’s other children, ordering that they be placed under the custody of the state government for proper care. Furthermore, plans are underway to apprehend the suspect’s neighbor, with subsequent contact tracing aimed at retrieving the child she had sold.

This deeply distressing incident highlights the pressing need for continued efforts to combat child trafficking and protect the vulnerable from exploitation. The state government’s commitment to prosecuting those involved sends a stern message that such crimes will not be tolerated, ensuring that justice is served for the innocent victims caught in the crossfire of desperation and economic hardship.
