Zamfara Launches Own Security Outfit

In a significant move to tackle security breaches, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has formally launched the Community Protection Guards (CPG).

The launch of the CPG on Wednesday is aimed at complementing the efforts of regular security forces. The ceremony was held at the Trade Fair complex in Gusau, the state capital, and drew the presence of six other governors from the North-West region, including Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Sokoto.

Sulaiman Bala Idris, the Governor’s spokesperson, stated that the state government is adopting a multi-faceted approach to address security challenges. Last year, Governor Dauda Lawal approved the engagement of 5,200 guards across the 14 Local Government Areas. The first batch of 2,645 Community Protection Guards graduated, having undergone rigorous training, drilling, and understanding of the rules of engagement.

Governor Dauda Lawal emphasized the commitment to gradual reforms across all sectors to instill sanity and accelerate development. He recognized the importance of addressing insecurity to achieve lofty goals and highlighted the establishment of the Community Protection Guards (Askarawa Zamfara) as a crucial step. These guards, having received extensive training, are expected to partner with security agencies to defend communities.

Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Radda, and Chairman of the North-West Governors Forum, reiterated their joint decision not to negotiate with bandits. He emphasized the unity against banditry and insecurity in the North-West, transcending political affiliations.

Chairing the occasion, former National Security Adviser Gen. Aliyu Muhammad Gusau (rtd) commended the Zamfara State government for establishing the CPG. The move signifies a collective effort to enhance security and protect communities in the face of prevalent challenges.
