Nigerians Shame Mali After Attack On Referee Of Match With Ivory Coast

The ongoing African Cup of Nations, AFCON football tournament took a particularly controversial point on Saturday after host Ivory Coast with a man down overturned the 1-0 goal lead of Mali to win 2-1 with the last kick of the game with the referee coming under the spotlight.

Controversy ensued when the Malian players surrounded the referee Mohamed Adel, for stopping the game before a corner kick that was to the advantage of Mali was taken.

GWG.ng reports that Malian player, Hamari Traore was shown a red card for taking his protests too far as the referee had to be escorted out of the stadium in the face of the belligerence of the Mali players.

Responding to the development and the controversy, Nigeria twitter user, Omojuwa said:

Many other X users took their turn as to the fairness of the referee.

GWG.ng gathered some of the comments

Safety Cabal @gabriel_bolatit

They failed themselves have advantage of playing against 10 players with a penalty chance they blow it away.

Chi @PatrioticGee

Omojuwa, a professional referee won’t end a game when there’s a corner and a clear goal scoring opportunity

Kelechi Emmanuel Okorie-Kalu @herculeenKC

They wanted the corner kick. Medicine after death. Ivory Coast saved their blushes with the last kicks of the game 90′ and 120′. So much momentum in that team but without two key players in the semis hope they deal well against Congo. If they do, we will win  again.

Monsieur Radical @Tunbolity

In fact, I was telling someone this is the first AFCON I’d be watching with host team not enjoying special privilege or favour, the officiating has been fair in their matches

Okeangelo @Dokeezy

They had a corner. The ref should have allowed them take it

HenryD1st @realhenrychriz

They had two penalties guy the first was clearly penalty but they canceled it which they where not supposed to

WestUnified @unified_dest

They had all the chance to disqualify Ivory Coast. At 80min they were still pressing high looking for 2nd goal

Raji Kamaldeen Feranmie @RFeranmie

Mali gifted them this victory with their wastefulness and complacency. Periodt

Mo Sani @Mo_sani97

They want to ruin this peaceful and non-controversial tournament with their antics.
