Yobe State is mourning the loss at 75 of its first elected governor, Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim, who was only one of two civilian governors sworn in for three consecutive times in the history of Nigeria.

GWG.ng reports that Bukar Ibrahim was first inaugurated at the advent of the ill-fathd Third Republic in January 1992 and bounced back at the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999 and was re-elected to the same office in 2003.

The only other person who attained a similar feat was Rev Jolly Nyame who made history with his gubernatorial inaugurations in Taraba State in 1992, 1999 and 2003.

However, Bukar Ibrahim went forward to serve another three terms in the Senate and had the record of entering the Senate in 2007 at the same time one of his wives. Khadija Bukar Abba Ibrahim who served as Yobe First Lady was elected into the House of Representatives in 2007 at the same time as her husband.

Born in 1949, he held the esteemed position of governor from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007. Notably, he was the pioneer elected governor from January 1992 to November 1993 during the Third Republic, leaving a significant mark on the state’s political landscape.

Beyond his gubernatorial role, Ibrahim ventured into national politics and, in 2007, secured a seat in the Senate to represent Yobe East. His political journey continued as he sought re-election in 2011, emerging victorious under the ANPP platform. However, his tenure in the Senate concluded in 2015 when he graciously stepped aside for Ibrahim Gaidam, another former governor of Yobe State.

The news of Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim’s demise has left the state in somber reflection. His legacy spans not only his leadership as the first elected governor but also his contributions to the Senate, symbolizing a chapter of dedication to public service. As details surrounding his passing emerge, the state and the nation at large come to terms with the departure of a political figure who played a pivotal role in shaping Yobe State’s history.
