The National Population Commission (NPC) has clarified that birth certificates will not be issued to individuals older than 18 years, citing guidelines outlined in the 1992 Act.

This announcement that birth certificates cannot be issued to adults was made by Mr Akin Oyetunde, the NPC State Director in Oyo State, during a briefing with journalists in Ibadan.

According to Oyetunde, individuals born before 1992 and those above 18 years of age will instead receive an Attestation of Birth, as stipulated by the Act. However, individuals below 18 years will still be eligible to receive birth certificates from the Commission.

Emphasizing the accessibility of registration facilities, Oyetunde highlighted that each local government in the state has dedicated birth and death registration centers. He assured that these centers uniformly issue certificates that are recognized and accepted across various platforms.

Besides the clarification on the birth certificates, the NPC official also spoke on the postponed National Population and Housing Census initially slated for 2023, Oyetunde assured that all necessary preparations have been made. He expressed readiness for the census exercise, noting that materials have been distributed to local governments, and personnel have undergone training in anticipation of the census.

While awaiting the green light from the Federal Government to commence the census, Oyetunde affirmed the Commission’s readiness to execute the task promptly once authorization is granted. He reiterated that all logistical arrangements and training initiatives have been completed, demonstrating the Commission’s commitment to conducting an accurate and comprehensive census.
