Inetimi Alfred Odon, more commonly known as Timaya, has bravely opened up about his past struggles with drug addiction, shedding light on a difficult chapter in his life.

Timaya, a singer, songwriter, and performer, hailing from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, has been transparent about the hurdles he faced while battling to break free from drug addiction.

Timaya’s musical journey traces back to 1997 when he started with the group “Dem Mama Soldiers,” but it was his solo career that propelled him to stardom. In 2005, he made waves with “Dem Mama,” a single that narrated the tragic events in Odi, his hometown. This track was featured on his debut album “True Story,” which garnered widespread acclaim upon its release in 2006.

Now 41 years old, the artiste revealed that during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, he grappled with an addiction to a substance known as “Molly.” This addiction took a toll on his health, resulting in significant weight loss and a frail appearance that sparked concern among fans and the public. A photo of him looking emaciated went viral, underscoring the seriousness of his situation.

Timaya shared that overcoming his drug addiction was a monumental struggle, one that he knew was vital for his own survival. His battle was not just a personal one but also a message to others about the perils of substance abuse. He has never claimed to be perfect, acknowledging the pressures and temptations that accompany fame.

Despite these obstacles, Timaya has remained a prominent figure in the Nigerian music scene, celebrated for his authenticity and contributions to the industry. He has observed the emergence of new talents like Buju BNXN and Ruger, lauding them as the future of Nigerian music and recognizing their superior songwriting skills compared to his generation.
