The Super Eagles of Nigeria lost the final of the African Cup of Nations, AFCON tournament to a resurgent Elephants of Ivory Coast who bounced back from a goal down to clip the Eagles 2-1 at full time.

Nigeria was largely unimpressive in the match as the Eagles preferred to sit back and absorb the pressure from the resurgent Elephants.

Understandably, Ivory Coast dominated possession with more than 63% with Nigeria managing only 37% of the possession despite parading some of the best midfielders in the competition.

Ivory Coast pushed 18 shots with six on target while Nigeria managed only five shots with only one on target which was the goal from the header by Eagles on field captain Troost-Ekong.

GWG.ng reports that remarkably, the match did not witness a single off-side.

The defeat of Nigeria by Ivory Coast was the third time that the Elephants would come back in the tournament from the sound of defeat to overcome their opposite side.

The Elephants had even more significantly qualified from the Group Stages on the basis of being one of the best losers.

It was a disappointing outing for Nigeria which had shown earlier promise at the onset of the tournament who, however, disappointed in the AFCON final.
