A tense situation unfolded when two women engaged in a heated argument over the ownership of $1,000 discovered inside a second-hand bag popularly known as okrika at the point of being sold. The altercation occurred during a transaction involving the sale of a second-hand bag, colloquially referred to as “grade 1” or “okrika bag” in Nigerian terminology.

The seller, who had instructed one of her salesgirls to record the interaction, had already received payment of four thousand naira from the prospective buyer. However, upon inspecting the bag before handing it over, she stumbled upon the significant sum of $1,000.

Upon uncovering the money, the buyer vehemently asserted her claim to both the bag and its newfound contents, arguing that the discovered funds rightfully belonged to her. This assertion ignited a heated exchange between the two parties, with the seller attempting to clarify that standard procedure dictates thorough examination of bags prior to sale, and any discoveries therein rightfully belonging to the seller.

Despite the seller’s explanation and corroboration from her salesgirls affirming their adherence to inspection procedures, the buyer remained steadfast in her claim to the money. The disagreement escalated as emotions ran high, with neither party willing to concede their stance on the matter.

Amidst the escalating tension, the buyer stepped outside to make a phone call, seeking support for her claim. Subsequently, another woman, aligned with the seller’s perspective, entered the scene and assisted in interpreting the conversation between the buyer and her contact.

Despite efforts to mediate and explain the situation, the buyer remained fixated on the monetary discovery, refusing to acknowledge the seller’s arguments regarding ownership. Both parties remained resolute in their positions, each determined to retain possession of the substantial sum, particularly amidst the economic challenges facing the country. Given the circumstances, the pressing question arises: who rightfully owns the discovered money? The comment section has been filled with a variety of reactions.

See some reactions below:

@yusuf_temi: Once money have exchanged hands , buyer takes ownership

@fainttv1: The seller put the money inside? She should have removed it before selling the bag na.

@Jephy_Wrld: Turn it around what if it was cannabis or any contraband and the buyer didn’t search it before going home maybe on her way home police stopped her and searched it who is to be arrested

I think the buyer bcos the seller will definitely deny it

@Adasu_d_gr8: No, she will definitely take the police to the seller, and the receipt will implicate the seller.

Now, the buyer will never accept such cenerio, so why now that it’s money

@youngskidmusic_: Neither did the seller put the money there too. She already sold the bag. She should let the money go, after all she’s been finding stuffs, so God didn’t make this hers. Better still, they can share it equally. 🤨

@Hitmaahill: Okay what if naa gun or something dangerous them find inside the bag she go claim the bag
