AEDC Threatens To Disconnect Presidential Villa Over N923m Debt

The Nigerian Presidential Villa in Abuja, along with numerous Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), is under the spotlight as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has issued a stern warning to disconnect them over unpaid debt amounting to N47.1 billion.

Specifically, the AEDC’s disconnection notice singles out the Presidential Villa itself for a significant portion of this debt, totaling N923,873,150 in unpaid electricity charges.

This action by the AEDC comes after repeated attempts to secure payment for the debt fell on deaf ears. The company expressed frustration over the prolonged nature of these debts and emphasized the necessity of resorting to publishing the details of the unpaid bills as a final measure to compel the government entities to settle their obligations.

With a 10-day ultimatum given to the MDAs to clear their dues, the looming threat of disconnection and subsequent blackout from February 28, 2024, adds urgency to the situation.

The scenario raises eyebrows, especially considering the budget allocations earmarked for electricity charges and maintenance in previous years.

During the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the 2023 approved budget allocated a modest N35.9 million for the Presidential Villa’s electricity charges, while a significantly higher sum of N4.9 billion was set aside for electricity maintenance in 2018.

These allocations were justified by the Director General of the Budget Office, Mr. Ben Akabueze, who highlighted the expansive nature of the Villa and the imperative to maintain its facilities in optimal condition.

Furthermore, under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the 2024 budget has allocated N37.9 million for powering generators in the State House and a substantial N260.8 million for electricity charges.
