NAFDAC on Paracetamol

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a vital warning to Nigerians regarding the emergence of counterfeit Paracetamol Injection circulating in the market.

This fraudulent product, labeled as “Paracetamol Injection 300mg/2ml I.M I.V Aminoglycoside Antibacterial,” has raised significant concerns among healthcare practitioners and the public alike.

Following laboratory analysis conducted by NAFDAC’s Kaduna Laboratory, it was revealed that the purported Aminoglycoside Antibacterial injection contained only paracetamol, deviating from its labeled composition. Aminoglycoside Antibacterial is a class of antibiotics primarily used to treat severe bacterial infections, rendering the mislabeling of the product a matter of grave concern.

The genuine Paracetamol Injection 300mg/2ml I.M I.V is manufactured by Shandong Shenglu Pharm. Co. Ltd, China, and marketed in Nigeria by Sifam Life Care Pharmaceutical Ltd, Kano. It is officially registered with NAFDAC as an analgesic for pain relief and fever reduction, devoid of any antibacterial properties. Confirming the counterfeit nature of the circulating product, Sifam Life Care Pharmaceutical Ltd, the Certificate of Registration Holder, has verified the discrepancy.

Taking swift action, NAFDAC has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct comprehensive surveillance and remove the counterfeit product from circulation within their respective jurisdictions. Importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers are urged to exercise utmost caution and vigilance within the supply chain to prevent the importation, distribution, sale, and utilization of the falsified product.

Furthermore, NAFDAC emphasizes the importance of promptly reporting any suspicions of substandard or falsified medicines or medical devices to the nearest NAFDAC office. Additionally, healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events or side effects associated with the use of medicinal products or devices through the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website or via the Med-safety application. This concerted effort aims to safeguard public health and ensure the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain in Nigeria.
