In response to a noticeable increase in Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) cases within the university community, the University Health Service (UHS) at the University of Ibadan has issued a health advisory urging proactive measures to combat the spread of the ailment.

According to the advisory released by Dr. Aderonke B. Ajav, Director of Health Service, UHS has observed a surge in individuals presenting symptoms of URTI, attributed largely to environmental factors. This surge not only impacts individuals’ health but also leads to significant loss of productivity due to time spent seeking care and recovery periods.

To address this issue, members of the university community and the general public are encouraged to take preventive actions such as wearing face masks in public, practicing regular hand hygiene with soap and water or sanitizer, and boosting immunity through the consumption of fruits, especially citrus fruits. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking at least 3-4 liters of water daily is advised.

The advisory also emphasizes the importance of avoiding gatherings or crowded places, especially when feeling unwell, to prevent the spread of respiratory conditions to others and protect oneself from acquiring new infections.

Furthermore, with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency projecting high air temperatures reaching up to 40°C in the coming days, individuals are advised to seek shade, use fans, and wear light, breathable clothing to minimize the negative effects of the heat. Strenuous outdoor activities should be avoided during peak heat hours, and individuals are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible between 12 noon and 4 pm.
