Politicians Defeated In 2023 Election Blamed For Soaring Inflation And Food Shortages By Shettima

 Vice-President Kashim Shettima has voiced grave accusations against politicians who suffered defeat in the 2023 general election, alleging a clandestine plot to destabilize Nigeria by orchestrating food smuggling to trigger inflation.

Speaking at a conference on Public Wealth Management in Abuja, Mr. Shettima disclosed the interception of 45 trucks smuggling food out of the country, mainly maize, to neighboring nations. He underscored the alarming prevalence of illegal smuggling routes, notably citing 32 routes along the Ilela axis alone.

Highlighting the immediate impact of the interceptions, Mr. Shettima noted a significant drop in maize prices, from N60,000 to N50,000 per unit. He characterized these actions as a deliberate effort to undermine national stability, urging unity in the face of adversity.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the vice-president lamented the desperation of certain political elements, alleging their intent to sow discord and chaos due to electoral defeat. He urged a collective commitment to governance, transcending political partisanship for the greater good of the nation.

While refraining from naming specific individuals, Mr. Shettima hinted at political figures aiming to exacerbate economic turmoil and disrupt President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Notably, opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have criticized Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly amidst escalating inflation and currency depreciation.

Although food price hikes predate Tinubu’s tenure, his recent policy shifts, such as fuel subsidy removal and currency devaluation, have exacerbated economic challenges. The resultant inflationary pressures have triggered widespread protests across various states, demanding urgent intervention.

In response to public outcry, Tinubu directed the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of grain to alleviate food shortages. However, the vice-president’s assertions have faced skepticism, with many Nigerians attributing economic hardships to broader systemic issues rather than political sabotage.
