The President General (PG) of Umuoji Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra, Silas Onyima, was tragically shot dead by suspected assassins at his country home on Friday night. The confirmation of his killing came from DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO).

According to Ikenga, no arrests had been made at the time of the incident. However, he assured that investigations were underway, with the police collaborating with locals to unravel the circumstances surrounding Onyima’s death and identify the perpetrators.

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Ikenga stated that police personnel had been deployed to Umuoji to maintain order and ensure the safety of the community members. He urged the people to remain calm while reassuring them that the police were taking all necessary measures to address the situation effectively.

The body of the deceased was recovered and subsequently deposited in the morgue following the tragic incident.

Onyima’s untimely demise adds to the grim tally of Presidents General of Communities who have met violent ends in Anambra. The list includes Chief Ike Okolo of Obosi Community, who was murdered in January 2023, and Chief Paul Chinedu of Nanka Community, who was killed in the presence of his family in October 2021.

Similarly, Francis Onwuachi, the President General of Omor Community, suffered a similar fate in March 2021, while Chief Anthony Igboka of Nimo was gruesomely murdered in April 2019. These incidents underscore the concerning trend of violence targeting community leaders in the region, raising questions about the overall security situation and the safety of those serving their communities in leadership roles.
