Tinubu Approves N12bn To Clear Sports Debts To Nigerian Players, Coaches

President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards resolving Nigeria’s sports debts by approving the payment of N12 billion, which includes outstanding dues owed to the national teams, notably the Super Eagles.

The financial burden and sports debts inherited by President Tinubu, had long troubled the Nigerian sports community, sparking concerns about the welfare and stability of the national teams.

Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, announced the approval, lauding President Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to supporting the national teams.

The allocated funds are intended to clear various debts, spanning unpaid salaries for senior national team coaches, outstanding allowances, entitlements, and promised payments owed to senior national teams, female teams, and the Under-20 national team.

This move signifies a positive shift in addressing the financial challenges plaguing Nigeria’s sports sector, instilling hope for improved conditions and renewed support for the country’s athletes and teams.

GWG.ng reports that the approval by the president is expected to be a moral booster for the sports community given the history of embarrassment caused by the indebtedness of Nigeria to both coaches and players.

Many coaches have walked out on Nigeria and in some cases, some who otherwise would have come have declined because of the history of debts owed coaches by Nigeria, an eyesore that the step taken by President Tinubu is expected to erase from the face of sports.
