Afenifere Asks Yoruba To Boycott NLC Protest Against Hardship
The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has released a cautious advisory to the Yoruba populace in response to the prevailing economic difficulties plaguing Nigeria.
The Pa Reuben Fasoranti, led organization has urged Yoruba individuals to exercise restraint and avoid partaking in protests and rallies slated to address the country’s economic woes.
This advisory follows the Nigeria Labour Congress’s (NLC) declaration of a two-day nationwide strike set for February 27-28, 2024, aimed at voicing workers’ discontentment with Nigeria’s economic situation.
The economic challenges prompting protests stem largely from the policies enacted by President Bola Tinubu, notably the removal of fuel subsidies and the decision to float the naira. These measures have precipitated a sharp escalation in the prices of essential goods and services and a corresponding depreciation of the national currency, exacerbating the financial hardship experienced by Nigerians across various sectors. In response, states like Niger, Oyo, and Osun have witnessed protests demanding immediate government intervention to alleviate the burgeoning economic strain on citizens.
Despite the mounting difficulties, the message from Afenifere to the Yoruba community emphasizes patience and confidence in the government’s ability to address the underlying issues. Pa Fasoranti acknowledges the severity of the hardships but underscores the necessity of implementing these stringent economic reforms. He reassures citizens that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to tackling the fundamental causes of the economic challenges inherited from previous administrations.
Afenifere’s stance underscores not only a plea for calm but also an invitation to engage constructively in dialogue and contribute positively to the ongoing economic reforms. The organization firmly believes that through unity and understanding, Nigeria can navigate through this turbulent economic period and emerge stronger. Ultimately, while the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the national currency may inflict short-term pain, Afenifere views these measures as essential steps towards fostering a more sustainable economic environment that will benefit all Nigerians in the long run.
